In 1788, the French Revolution traps the Morlands’ continental branch in a rapidly radicalising Paris. Henri-Marie Fitzjames Stuart tries to protect his daughter Heloise, his mistress Marie-France and their son Morland by arranging alliances with revolutionary power. Heloise is forced into a loveless marriage, while Henri-Marie’s association with Georges Danton cannot save him when political factions turn upon one another.
After Danton’s fall and the Terror’s violence, Heloise escapes to England and is welcomed into the Yorkshire family. Her arrival coincides with marriages and succession anxieties at Morland Place, where the future appears secure but carries hidden dangers. The novel follows the fragile thread connecting private survival to revolutionary allegiance, showing how quickly political protection can become a death sentence.
