Cynthia Harrod-Eagles is a British novelist known for historical family sagas and crime fiction. Born in Shepherd’s Bush, London, she studied English, history and philosophy at the University of Edinburgh and University College London. She wrote her first novel while at university and won the 1972 Young Writers’ Award for The Waiting Game. After combining writing with various commercial jobs, she became a full-time author in 1979 following the success of her ambitious historical series, The Morland Dynasty.

Her principal historical achievement is the 36-volume Morland Dynasty, which follows successive generations of a Yorkshire family through English history, beginning during the Wars of the Roses and reaching the political crises of 1936. Conceived as “history without tears”, the series blends fictional domestic lives with real rulers, wars and social change, paying particular attention to how ordinary people lived. Harrod-Eagles has also written the War at Home series, set during and immediately after the First World War; the Edwardian Ashmore Castle novels; and the Kirov Saga, set in nineteenth-century Russia. Alongside these historical works, she is the author of the contemporary Inspector Bill Slider mysteries.
