The Colonel’s Daughter
In the summer of 1954, George West is a newly qualified architect completing his National Service when he meets seventeen-year-old Josella Grace, the reserved daughter of a retired colonel. He falls deeply in love, but class expectations, family authority and secrets surrounding Josella make fulfilment seem impossible. Their separation becomes the defining event of his young life.
The story alternates George’s account of first love with Josella’s perspective ten years later, in 1964. Their two voices reveal how the same relationship was experienced and misunderstood, and how choices made under post-war conventions continue to shape a more permissive decade. Rather than offering an easy reunion, the novel examines memory, emotional damage and the enduring consequences of silence.
