Till the Boys Come Home
In 1918, the Hunters and their servants face the most dangerous year of the First World War. Edward accepts conscription and is sent to the front, partly to escape difficulties at home. Laura is driven from Artemis House by shelling and begins driving an ambulance in London, while Sadie’s love remains unreturned and Ethel hides her own grief by caring for other people’s children.
Rationing, labour shortages and the extension of military service tighten the war’s hold on civilian life. After Russia leaves the conflict, the German Spring Offensive drives the Allies back and makes defeat appear possible. The family can see no clear end, yet small acts of loyalty and service preserve hope as soldiers and civilians endure the final months before victory.
