In 1843, Charlotte Meldon believes herself destitute after her father’s death until a lawyer reveals that she belongs to the Morland family and is a wealthy countess in her own right. Launched into the London Season beside her vivacious cousin Fanny, Charlotte is expected to secure a brilliant marriage and attracts the attention of the eligible Oliver Fleetwood.
Society’s apparent opportunities soon become a source of disillusion. Fanny, who considers herself emotionally invulnerable, falls in love first, while Charlotte begins to reject a life organised around display and marriage. Her decision to defy convention leads her away from the expected aristocratic future. The novel uses early Victorian society to examine whether wealth can offer a woman genuine independence rather than merely a more luxurious form of confinement.
