In 1803, the collapse of the Peace of Amiens leaves the English governess Anne Peters stranded in Paris without money or protection. Count Nikolai Kirov offers her escape and employment with his children in Russia. Moving between St Petersburg, Moscow and the Caucasus, Anne enters an aristocratic world of wealth, ceremony and fierce family expectation, gradually becoming Anna Petrovna.
Her attachment to Kirov deepens into a forbidden love, while her growing affection for Russia complicates any hope of returning to England. As Napoleon prepares the invasion of 1812, personal allegiance becomes inseparable from national survival. Anna must decide whether she can claim a country and family that may never fully accept her, even as war threatens to destroy the life she has made.
