War at Home

The War at Home series follows the Hunter family, their friends and their household staff through the First World War and its difficult aftermath. While men serve at the front, the women and servants of Artemis House face bereavement, shortages, air raids, new forms of work and the disruption of social roles that had once seemed permanent.

The later volumes in this export cover 1918 and 1919, moving from the German Spring Offensive and the final battles to demobilisation, the Paris Peace Conference and unemployment at home. The family’s personal separations and reconciliations show that the Armistice did not immediately restore peace: returning soldiers, displaced workers and grieving families must all decide what can be rebuilt from the war’s losses.
