Arthur Rowe, recently released after serving a sentence for the mercy killing of his wife, attends a charity fête during the Blitz and wins a cake through a fortune-telling contest. The organisers try to recover the prize, and Rowe discovers that the apparently harmless event is being used by a network connected to Nazi espionage.
A bombing leaves him without his memory, making it difficult to distinguish conspiracy from guilt and fear. As Rowe reconstructs his identity, he is pursued through blacked-out London by people prepared to murder for information concealed within ordinary objects. The wartime state and the enemy network both depend on secrecy, leaving private conscience as his only uncertain guide.
