Writer Maurice Bendrix begins an affair with Sarah Miles during the Second World War while her husband Henry remains unaware of the relationship. When a bomb strikes the house in which the lovers are meeting, Sarah abruptly ends the affair without explaining the promise that governs her decision.

After the war, Bendrix’s jealousy leads him to hire a private detective and reconstruct Sarah’s private life. Her diary reveals a struggle between desire and religious belief that he cannot accept on her terms. The novel moves between 1944 and the post-war years, making damaged London a setting for emotional possession, grief and reluctant encounters with faith.
