East Anglia, 902. After Æthelwold dies in battle, his fictional daughter Elinor inherits a fractured kingdom divided between Danish settlers and Anglo-Saxon subjects. She marries a Danish chieftain in the hope of creating a durable settlement and must rapidly learn the demands of judgement, military command and royal diplomacy.
Repeated pregnancy loss and the collapse of her marriage deny Elinor the conventional dynastic future expected of a queen. Her friendship with Æthelflæd of Mercia and cooperation with Edward the Elder draw her into campaigns against renewed Viking attack, while her fair government offers another form of legacy: integration and peace rather than an heir.
