Edo, March 1700. A skeleton uncovered beneath a fallen tree is identified as a cousin of the shogun who vanished during the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657. Evidence links the death to Sano’s mother and to the legend of a burning kimono blamed for the disaster.
The shogun gives Sano and Reiko three days to identify the murderer. Their inquiry moves between the present court struggle and memories of a city consumed by fire, exposing false identities and family secrets protected for four decades. Clearing Sano’s mother requires proving how personal revenge was hidden inside a public catastrophe.
