Sarah Bain Barrett investigates with Hugh Staunton, Mick O’Reilly, her husband Thomas and her reporter sister Sally, while psychologist Joshua Lewes applies the new practice of criminal profiling.
Inspector Reid believes the Torso Murderer and Jack the Ripper are the same person, a theory Sarah knows may send the police in the wrong direction. Her disagreement with Barrett damages their marriage, and Reid’s determination to expose what Sarah’s group concealed in 1888 threatens them with prosecution. Solving the new killing requires confronting both a cold case and the cost of their earlier success.
