The Dragon King’s Palace
First published 2003
In June 1694, Reiko, her pregnant friend Midori, the shogun’s mother and Lady Yanagisawa are abducted while travelling towards Mount Fuji. The women are confined in a ruined palace by a captor whose demands are connected to events long buried by powerful families.
The shogun orders Sano to recover them immediately, forcing him to work with Chamberlain Yanagisawa and Police Commissioner Hoshina, his most dangerous political enemies. Inside the prison, Reiko and the other women pursue their own evidence. Rescue depends on cooperation between people divided by rivalry, class and mutual suspicion.
