After surviving the defeat at Sekigahara in 1600, the reckless Takezō returns to his village as a hunted fugitive. Capture and confinement under the Zen monk Takuan Sōhō begin his transformation into Miyamoto Musashi, but a new name does not immediately quiet his pride. His early wanderings bring him against the Hōzōin spear monks and the swordsmen of the Yoshioka school.

The opening volume presents swordsmanship as a moral and intellectual discipline rather than a sequence of victories. Musashi’s attraction to Otsū, his shame over past violence and his encounters with teachers and rivals establish the conflict between human attachment and the solitary ideal he believes mastery requires.
