47 Ronin
First published 1935
After Asano Naganori attacks the court official Kira Yoshinaka inside Edo Castle, the shogunate orders Asano’s immediate death and confiscates his domain. His retainers become rōnin, divided between accepting Tokugawa law and preserving the obligations they believe survive their lord. Under Ōishi Yoshio, a group quietly prepares revenge while presenting itself as dispersed and defeated.
Yoshikawa’s account follows the waiting, deception and personal sacrifice behind the 1703 attack on Kira’s residence. Rather than treating the vendetta as a simple triumph of loyalty, the novel keeps legal authority, family duty and the certainty of punishment in tension with the rōnin’s determination to act.
