David Kirk

David Kirk is a British author of historical fiction whose work concentrates on samurai culture and the political transformation of early seventeenth-century Japan. He grew up in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and lived in Sendai, Japan, from 2008 to 2016 before moving to Alberta, Canada. His years in Japan and interest in Japanese history informed a detailed treatment of martial training, social hierarchy, religious belief and the codes of honour governing the warrior class.

Kirk is best known for the Saga of Musashi Miyamoto, inspired by the life of the celebrated swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Child of Vengeance follows the young Bennosuke—later known as Musashi—as family conflict and the violence surrounding the Battle of Sekigahara draw him towards the warrior’s path. Its sequel, Sword of Honor, follows Musashi to Kyoto, where his feud with the influential Yoshioka school forces him to confront the relationship between skill, reputation, pride and survival. The novels combine vigorous combat with an examination of the cultural and philosophical tensions of feudal Japan.
