Richard and Saladin is a concise parallel account of the two commanders whose reputations came to define the Third Crusade. It explains how Saladin’s victory at Hattin and recovery of Jerusalem brought Richard I to the eastern Mediterranean, where the English king assumed command of a divided crusading army.
The narrative centres on the siege of Acre, Richard’s victory at Arsuf and the diplomacy that followed. Rather than presenting a simple contest between personal enemies, Duggan examines strategy, negotiation, reputation and the practical limits that prevented either ruler from achieving an outright settlement of the war.
