Battle of Arsuf

The Battle of Arsuf was fought in September 1191 as Richard I’s crusader army marched south from Acre along the coast. Saladin’s forces harassed the column before the crusaders counterattacked and won a significant tactical victory.

Arsuf mattered because it restored crusader confidence after the long siege of Acre and confirmed Richard’s reputation as a battlefield commander. It did not, however, deliver Jerusalem, and the wider strategic problem of holding territory remained unresolved.

The Red King uses Arsuf and its aftermath as part of Roger of Huntley’s Third Crusade experience. The battle is useful for fiction about cavalry charges, disciplined marching, fractured crusader leadership and the difference between battlefield victory and strategic success.
