Conrad of Montferrat was a crusader noble who became a leading defender of Tyre and claimant to the throne of Jerusalem. He helped preserve Tyre after the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin, competed with Guy of Lusignan for the crown and was assassinated shortly after being elected king.
In Robert Broomall’s Death and Glory, the murder of Conrad of Montferrat changes the political balance among the crusaders and gives Richard I another chance to pursue Jerusalem. In Robert Broomall’s The Red King, Richard’s victory at Arsuf does not resolve the deeper strategic problem of Jerusalem, and tensions with Saladin and Conrad of Montferrat complicate the crusader cause.
