Second Battle of Lincoln

The Battle of Lincoln was fought in May 1217 during the First Barons’ War, after King John’s death left the throne to the child Henry III. Royalist forces under William Marshal defeated supporters of Prince Louis of France and rebel barons inside and around the city.

Lincoln mattered because it revived the royalist cause at a moment when Louis seemed capable of taking the English crown. The victory helped shift momentum toward Henry III’s government and weakened the legitimacy of the French-backed rebellion.

Return of the Death’s Heads, Part II belongs to the same crisis, with warfare in England shaped by Louis’s invasion, John’s death and the fight to preserve the child king’s claim.
