Hugh de Cressi’s love for Eve Clavering draws him into feud, exile and service in France during the Hundred Years’ War. Their separation is prolonged by political violence and by the arrival of plague, while the enigmatic Grey Dick and the avenging figure known as Murgh give the story an atmosphere of fatal judgment.
The novel links English gentry conflict with campaigning in France and the Black Death. Military service, disrupted travel, deserted communities and mass mortality make the romance a broad panorama of Europe in the middle of the fourteenth century.
