First Barons’ War

1215–1217 CE

The First Barons’ War broke out after Magna Carta failed and rebel barons invited Prince Louis of France to claim the English throne. John’s death in 1216 changed the conflict, as his young son Henry III became a rallying point for royalist recovery. The war ended after royalist victories and the reissue of Magna Carta under Henry’s minority government.

The war matters because it shows the fragility of kingship after John’s reign. England came close to accepting a French prince as king, while regency politics, castles, and baronial loyalties determined the outcome. It also helped transform Magna Carta from a failed peace settlement into a reissued political document.

Elizabeth Chadwick’s William Marshal novels are especially relevant for the loyalist side of the crisis.
