King John’s claim to the English throne is challenged through the competing rights of his nephew Arthur, drawing England and France into war. Alliances shift rapidly as papal authority, noble loyalty and dynastic inheritance become entangled, while the Bastard Faulconbridge provides a sceptical view of political expediency.
Arthur’s fate intensifies opposition to John and contributes to a baronial revolt supported by French intervention. Although Shakespeare omits Magna Carta, the play moves into the crisis associated with the First Barons’ War, presenting royal legitimacy as something continually tested by military failure, contested succession and the changing loyalties of magnates.
