Abolitionism and American Slavery

American abolitionism developed through Black activism, religious reform, antislavery publishing, political organisation and direct resistance to enslavement. It existed alongside a slave system defended by law, violence, property claims and racial ideology.

By the 1850s, conflicts over fugitive slaves, expansion into new territories and the future of slavery made compromise increasingly unstable. The Civil War turned abolitionist conviction into military, political and personal crisis, especially for those who had spoken against slavery before confronting its realities in the field.

March places an abolitionist minister inside the Union war effort and tests reformist ideals against slavery, illness and violence.
