Return of the Death’s Heads, Part II
After King John’s death in 1216, the English crown passes to the child Henry III, leaving the royalist cause weak while Prince Louis still controls much of the kingdom. Roger of Huntley and the archer Matthew continue a hard campaign against French forces in the Weald, even as their own hatred for each other threatens to erupt. The novel follows the final struggle of the First Barons’ War, where guerrilla violence, dynastic uncertainty and battlefield survival decide England’s future.
The minority of Henry III gives the royalist cause a new legitimacy but no immediate military security. William Marshal and other supporters must persuade barons to abandon Louis while retaining enough force to defeat those who refuse. Roger and Matthew's campaign shows how local violence in forests and fortified towns contributes to the larger recovery of the English crown.
