Hastings
Richard fitz Malet grows up on the margins of a Norman noble family, the illegitimate son of a Norman father and the daughter of an English housecarl. Treated as little more than a servant by his half-brothers, he learns to rely on ability rather than birth at the very moment when Duke William’s claim to England begins to divide the people to whom Richard is connected by blood.
The invasion of 1066 turns his mixed heritage into a political and personal conflict. Hastings offers opportunity to a young man who has little status, but victory for the Normans also threatens the English world of his mother’s family. Richard must decide what loyalty means when conquest can raise him socially while destroying the society that formed half of his identity.
