Haile Selassie

1892–1975

Haile Selassie was emperor of Ethiopia and one of the major African rulers of the twentieth century. His resistance to Italian invasion, exile and restoration during the Second World War made him a symbol of Ethiopian sovereignty and anti-fascist resistance.

In Christopher Nicole’s The Sword and the Scalpel, in these sun-baked deserts, serving with the army of Hailie Selassie against the ambitions of Benito Mussolini, he gains first-hand knowledge of the horrors of war. Wilbur Smith’s Cry Wolf places Haile Selassie within a narrative shaped by empire, conquest and resistance, family, marriage and personal loyalty, and military command and battlefield decision-making.
