Publius Clodius Pulcher

c. 90s BCE–53 BCE

Publius Clodius Pulcher was a Roman politician of the late Republic, famous for populist politics, street violence and hostility to Cicero. His career shows the breakdown of elite norms in the years before Caesar’s civil war.

In Steven Saylor’s A Murder on the Appian Way, Publius Clodius Pulcher is killed after an encounter with the followers of Titus Annius Milo on the Appian Way.
