Devil’s Brood
First published 2008
England and France, 1172–1189. Henry II’s sons demand independent power, and Eleanor of Aquitaine supports their revolt against their father. Henry the Young King, Richard and Geoffrey seek aid from Louis VII of France and other enemies of the Angevin realm, turning a family dispute into international war.
Henry defeats the first rebellion and confines Eleanor, but the dynastic conflict continues through broken truces, rival alliances and the deaths of several heirs. Richard eventually joins Philip II of France against his father, and the novel ends with Henry’s defeat and death, leaving the divided family and empire to Richard.
