Jacquetta of Luxembourg becomes Duchess of Bedford through marriage to the English regent in France. After his death she secretly marries Richard Woodville, sacrificing rank for a partnership that brings her into the household of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou.

Jacquetta’s loyalty to the Lancastrian queen carries her family through the opening of the Wars of the Roses. The catastrophic Yorkist victory at the Battle of Towton destroys the Lancastrian field army, kills Elizabeth Woodville’s first husband and forces the Woodvilles to accommodate Edward IV’s new regime. Jacquetta tries to protect her family while recognising that Elizabeth may have an exceptional future.
