James Vernon presents modern British history from the mid-eighteenth century to the twenty-first century as a story shaped by the interaction of domestic change and a wider world. Industrialisation, market society, political reform and imperial expansion transformed Britain, while wars, migration, decolonisation and global economic change repeatedly altered the country’s institutions and sense of itself.

The second edition gives particular weight to the changing fortunes of liberal ideas about markets, government and empire, while also examining democracy and sovereignty, race and minority experience, public health and pandemics, and the history of the environment and climate crisis. Rather than presenting Britain simply as the maker of the modern world, Vernon emphasises how international forces, colonial relationships and global crises reshaped life within the British Isles.
