The Young Buglers

Two young English brothers become attached to the British army during the Peninsular War and serve as buglers while Wellington's forces campaign against Napoleon's armies in Spain and Portugal. Their youth places them close to the everyday life of the ranks, but their duties repeatedly carry them into danger during marches, battles and sieges.
Through their experiences, the novel follows the changing fortunes of the campaign from the perspective of boys growing rapidly into soldiers. Military adventure is combined with the practical realities of campaigning: uncertain roads, scarce supplies, sudden attacks and the discipline required to survive a long war far from home.
