Brothers Geoffrey and Lionel Vickars grow up in an English household strongly sympathetic to the Dutch struggle against Spanish rule. When England commits troops to the Netherlands in 1585, they obtain places with Francis Vere and cross the Channel to join the long war against Spain.

Their service brings sieges, raids, hazardous journeys and close contact with the English soldiers who helped sustain the Dutch revolt during its later stages. The brothers’ fortunes develop alongside the campaigns of the Veres and the changing Anglo-Spanish war, carrying the story from Leicester’s intervention towards the hard-fought operations that helped preserve the independence of the northern Netherlands.
