Woodrow Wilson was president of the United States from 1913 to 1921. His administration enacted major domestic reforms, led the country into the First World War in 1917 and promoted the Fourteen Points and League of Nations, but it also entrenched racial segregation in federal employment and suppressed dissent during wartime. A severe stroke in 1919 left him impaired while the Senate rejected American membership of the League.
Wilson appears in Ken Follett’s Fall of Giants, where his decisions are woven into a multinational account of the First World War and its settlement. He also figures in other historical novels about American politics in the 1910s, often embodying the tension between idealistic internationalism and the exclusions of his domestic record.
