Book
Rough Rider
Aaron Winslow cannot persuade his younger brother Lewis to abandon the idea of joining Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, so he goes with him to Cuba partly to protect him. At the same time Aaron considers work as a correspondent for the New York Journal, placing him between participation in the fighting and the rapidly expanding newspaper culture reporting it to American readers.
The Spanish-American War forces both brothers into a short but intense campaign shaped by tropical disease, difficult supply and highly publicised battles. Aaron’s position as potential reporter makes him increasingly aware of the difference between war as experienced by soldiers and war as presented to an audience at home.
