Gwydion grows up among the Belgic peoples of southern Britain while his father serves the resistance associated with Caratacus. The Roman invasion under Claudius overturns that security. When his father disappears during the fighting, Gwydion is forced to survive between communities divided over whether resistance, accommodation or service to Rome offers the safest future.

The novel follows the conquest through the eyes of a boy who can see courage and cruelty on both sides. Roads, forts and military organisation give Rome enormous power, but they do not erase local loyalties. Gwydion’s search for his father becomes a test of identity in a country where the arrival of the legions changes the meaning of home, authority and betrayal.
