Treece portrays the conflict through a dark world of warfare, sacrifice and political bargaining rather than through a later romantic image of Celtic unity.

Defeat drives resistance westward and turns Caratacus into both a military leader and a symbol used by others. Rome’s disciplined violence is matched by brutality within British society, leaving individuals trapped between traditions that demand obedience. The novel begins Treece’s Celtic sequence by treating conquest as a collision of unstable cultures rather than a simple struggle between civilisation and barbarism.
