African Queens explores the lives of powerful women who exercised political, military and dynastic authority across African history. It considers queens, regents and royal women from different regions, placing their careers within the kingdoms, court rivalries, diplomatic networks and conflicts of their time. The book focuses on how women gained, defended and used power, and on the ways their achievements were preserved or obscured in later historical memory.

The comparative approach also exposes the limits of surviving evidence. Some women appear through court chronicles, others through oral tradition, archaeology or accounts written by outsiders who misunderstood the institutions they observed. The book therefore considers not only how female authority operated but why later narratives sometimes reduced rulers to wives, mothers or exceptional curiosities rather than political actors in their own right.
