Ian Fleming

1908–1964

Ian Fleming was a British naval intelligence officer, journalist and author. During the Second World War he served as assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence and contributed to intelligence planning and specialist commando operations; after the war, those experiences informed his James Bond novels.

James R. Benn’s The Ninth Circle places Lieutenant Commander Fleming at the British Legation in Havana in January 1945. He works with Billy Boyle and Piotr Kazimierz during an investigation involving German intelligence and Cuba’s criminal networks, connecting Fleming’s real wartime service to the fictional case.
