30 Assault Unit Operations

The formation later known as 30 Assault Unit emerged from a Naval Intelligence proposal associated with Ian Fleming in 1942. Its specialist teams were intended to move with or ahead of advancing forces and seize documents, cryptographic material, equipment and knowledgeable personnel before the enemy could destroy or evacuate them.

Elements of the unit served in the Mediterranean, including the Allied operations in Sicily and Italy, before later missions in north-west Europe. Its work sat between commando raiding and intelligence collection: success depended less on holding territory than on identifying valuable targets quickly, securing them and transferring captured material to analysts and technical specialists.
