After the liberation of Paris, Billy Boyle and Piotr Kazimierz are sent to Saint Albans, a secluded English hospital for personnel damaged by clandestine warfare. Kaz is being treated for a heart condition, while Billy is exhausted, dependent on stimulants and tormented by news that Diana Seaton and Kaz’s sister are prisoners at Ravensbrück.
A British agent dies inside the secure hospital, and Major Cosgrove asks Billy to investigate unofficially. When another body is found, Billy must work among patients who may be traumatised, detained as security risks or concealing failed operations, even as his own judgement and recovery remain uncertain.
