Marius’ Mules XIII

by Simon Turney Book 14 in the Marius’ Mules series.

4.6(2,202)

Africa, 46 BCE. Pompey is dead and Egypt has been settled, but Caesar’s opponents regroup around Cato, Metellus Scipio and Titus Labienus. While Mark Antony struggles to govern Rome, the veterans cross to Africa against an army strengthened by Numidian support and the belief that republican resistance can still prevail.

Fronto faces former allies who understand Caesar’s methods and soldiers exhausted by years of civil war. The campaign culminates at Thapsus, but battlefield success cannot erase the bitterness of Romans killing Romans or the political consequences of Cato’s defiance. Caesar moves closer to sole power as the space for reconciliation disappears.
