Titus Labienus

Titus Labienus was one of Julius Caesar’s most experienced legates during the conquest of Gaul and commanded major operations on Caesar’s behalf. When civil war began in 49 BCE, he joined Pompey and became one of Caesar’s most determined opponents. He fought in Greece, North Africa and Spain and was killed at the Battle of Munda in 45 BCE.

Labienus appears prominently in novels about Caesar, including military series that follow the Gallic campaigns and the civil war. His change of allegiance gives fiction a valuable counterpoint to accounts centred on Caesar: it can be portrayed as betrayal, republican principle, personal rivalry or the predictable choice of a senator who had never become Caesar’s dependent. The limited evidence leaves his motives open to interpretation.
