Greece, 48 BCE. After the Spanish campaign and the fall of Massilia, Caesar carries the war across the Adriatic against Pompey’s larger forces. Short of ships, supplies and cavalry, the Caesarian army is exposed to blockade and defeat while old comrades now command on opposing sides.
Fronto must hold together veterans whose confidence in Caesar has been tested by civil bloodshed. Manoeuvre and attrition lead towards Dyrrhachium and the decisive Battle of Pharsalus, where Pompey, Cato and the senatorial coalition stake the Republic on one encounter. Victory promises an end to the war, but Pompey’s flight ensures that Caesar’s pursuit will draw the legions into a new crisis.
