In 1809, Sharpe is attached to the inexperienced South Essex Regiment under the incompetent Sir Henry Simmerson. After the regiment loses its colours during a disastrous encounter with the French, Sharpe promises to restore its honour by capturing an Imperial Eagle. The campaign leads to the Battle of Talavera, where he must hold his men together and fight for the promotion Simmerson is determined to deny him.

Talavera gives Sharpe an opportunity to repair damage caused by Simmerson's vanity, but taking an Imperial Eagle is also a concrete military achievement recognised across the army. The promise forces Sharpe to turn an embarrassed battalion into soldiers who can stand under pressure. His struggle for promotion therefore depends on battlefield leadership rather than patronage, directly challenging the social assumptions that keep a former ranker below men like Simmerson.
