Theodosius I

Theodosius I ruled the eastern Roman Empire from AD 379 and briefly reunited east and west before his death in 395. He recovered from the Gothic crisis through war and settlement, defeated rival emperors in civil conflict and promoted Nicene Christianity through law and imperial patronage. After troops massacred civilians at Thessalonica, Bishop Ambrose compelled a famous act of penance. Theodosius’s death left the empire divided between his young sons Arcadius and Honorius.

Theodosius appears in late Roman historical fiction about the Goths, religious transformation and the family of Galla Placidia. No single English-language novel has fixed his image, so writers may present him as orthodox lawgiver, pragmatic soldier or ruler whose civil wars weakened the empire. The dramatic confrontation with Ambrose is especially popular but survives through sources with strong ecclesiastical purposes.

In Adam Lofthouse’s Barbarian and the Throne, as Theodosius prepares for another imperial civil war, Videricus and Stilicho move towards the campaign that culminates at the Frigidus. In Adam Lofthouse’s Tribune and the Sword, Victorinus and Felicius are drawn into opposing loyalties as Maximus and Theodosius face one another across the empire.
