As armistice negotiations continue, the Korean War becomes a struggle for ridges and fortified hills. Caje Cole and his squad are ordered to seize ground that may be traded at the negotiating table, then hold it against Chinese troops capable of replacing losses and returning night after night.

At Triangle Hill, tactical success repeatedly gives way to counterattack. Cole’s work as a sniper is joined to the larger problem of moving ammunition, evacuating wounded men and defending exposed slopes. The novel portrays a battle of attrition in which soldiers continue dying for positions whose political value remains uncertain.
