The Mysterium
First published 2010
London, February 1304. Walter Evesham, former Chief Justice of the King’s Bench, has fallen from power after accusations of bribery and corruption and taken sanctuary at the Abbey of Sion. When he is found murdered in his cell, rumours immediately revive the name of the Mysterium, a killer Evesham was believed to have brought to justice years earlier.
Edward I orders Hugh Corbett to investigate as further killings spread fear through the city. Corbett discovers that the present violence cannot be understood without reconstructing the old prosecution and the secrets of people who benefited from it. The case becomes a test of whether the notorious murderer has truly returned or whether someone is using the legend of the Mysterium to settle debts created by Evesham’s corrupt career.
