Summer, 1381. In the aftermath of the crushed Peasants’ Revolt, Brother Athelstan is preparing to lead his parishioners on pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas Becket when he is summoned to a Cheapside house where three people have been murdered. One victim is a senior clerk in John of Gaunt’s secret chancery, giving the crime an immediate political importance.

The authorities suspect surviving rebels, but Athelstan and Sir John Cranston find evidence that points in less obvious directions. At the same time Athelstan receives threatening messages from an assassin calling himself Azrael. The two investigations draw together amid reprisals, espionage and the unstable peace imposed on London after the rising.
