Adventurer Anthony Cade agrees to deliver a politician’s memoirs and a set of compromising letters, drawing him into the disputed succession of the fictional Balkan kingdom of Herzoslovakia. At Chimneys, a country house used for political negotiations, a visitor is murdered and a historic jewel remains missing.
Superintendent Battle investigates among diplomats, aristocrats, impostors and secret agents. The novel combines the relaxed social world of the 1920s with the unstable dynastic politics left by war and revolution, using the country house as a meeting place where British influence, private profit and claims to a foreign throne become difficult to separate.
